Tsung-Chain Chang(Professor)

I got my PhD degree from National Taiwan University in 1985. I spent one year (1987-88) at the National Institutes of Health (NICHD, USA) as a visiting fellow. In 1996, I joined the Department of Medical Technology, National Cheng Kung University, as an associate professor. I was promoted as a professor in 2000. I am a microbiologist and my main interest is to develop molecular methods for diagnosis of clinically relevant microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. Before this, I developed impedance techniques for rapid identification of ORSA, E. coli, and yeasts in positive blood cultures. The impedimetric method was also applied for rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing of gram-negative bacteria in positive blood cultures and used for differentiation of nonfermenters from fermenters in positive blood cultures.

Research


Our lab focuses studies on developing molecular methods for diagnosis of clinically relevant microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. These molecular methods include PCR, multiplex PCR, sequence based identification, and oligonucleotide array. Especially we put emphasis on the array methods. So far we have developed chips for identification of Acinetobacter, viridans streptococci, and clinically important molds, non-fermenter bacteria, streptococci, yeasts, anaerobic bacteria and Legionella. Identification and antibiotic resistance of Mycobacterium are now our studying targets.
